FENESIA – Mie Aceh, a typical noodle dish from the province of Aceh at the western end of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, has become one of the most famous culinary delights in the region.
Famous for its spicy taste and spices, Mie Aceh has become an integral part of Indonesia’s culinary heritage.
1. Two Main Variants
Mie Aceh comes in two main variants: Mie Aceh Goreng (fried noodles) and Mie Aceh Kuah (soup noodles).
Mie Aceh Goreng is noodles fried with various spices and meat such as chicken, beef, or seafood. While Mie Aceh Kuah is noodles served in a typical spicy Aceh broth.
2. Spicy Broth and Spices
The Mie Aceh broth is known to be very spicy, thanks to the use of Aceh red chilies known as “cabe merah giling.” Spices such as turmeric, coriander, ginger, and lemongrass are also an important part of this broth.
The broth is thick with the addition of coconut milk, eggs, and peanuts, giving the Mie Aceh a unique and enticing flavor.
3. Variants of Additional Ingredients
Mie Aceh is often served with various additional ingredients that can be adjusted to taste, such as chicken, beef, shrimp, boiled eggs, and bean sprouts. There are also vegetarian variations that use tofu or tempeh as a meat alternative.
