FENESIA – Wajik, a traditional Javanese dish, is often served at weddings and big events, and is also a popular snack during Eid al-Fitr. Made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and palm sugar, this dish has been around since the Majapahit era.

Wajik is a popular traditional Indonesian food in various regions. However, its storage period is only 15 days.

In each region, the cooking method varies because the glutinous rice grains used may not fully expand.

Here is the Recipe for Caramel Glutinous Rice Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg glutinous rice,
  • 1,000 ml coconut milk from 3 mature coconuts,
  • 750 grams of granulated sugar,
  • 1 tsp fine salt,
  • 5 pandan leaves,
  • Vegetable oil,
  • Banana leaves or plastic wrap

Instructions:

  • Soak the glutinous rice for 3 hours, then wash it clean.
  • Mix all the ingredients except the glutinous rice in a pan, cook until the sugar dissolves.
  • Add the glutinous rice and cook until the coconut milk reduces. Turn off the stove.
  • Steam the glutinous rice in a steamer lined with banana leaves for 25 minutes.
  • Prepare a baking dish, grease it with vegetable oil, then line it with banana leaves. Pour in the steamed glutinous rice.
  • Spread and compact it, then let it cool.
  • Cut as desired and serve.
